Pre-Sales: Domain Related Questions

Q: If I register my domain through Your-Site, do I own the domain? Can I transfer it at will?

A: Although Your-Site registers the domain on your behalf, you own the domain. Upon request, we can provide you with a password for a web site that will enable you to transfer the domain or make any modifications necessary.

top

Q: If I wish to register a second domain for an account, what does it cost me?

A: Additional domains start at $14.99 a year, with a minimum of one year's payment in advance.

top

Q: How long does it take until my domain is registered and live on the Internet.

A: We register your domain as soon as we receive payment for the registration. If you are paying via creditcard, and your card is sucesfully charged then we register it right away. If you are paying via check or money order, we wait until we receive them in the mail before registering your domain. The domain is typically live within 24 hours.

top

Q: I need a .co.uk or other TLD domain registered. Can you register this for me? Can you host this type of domain?

A: We can only register .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .us , .mobi and .co domains. We do support hosting domains from any other TLD; however, you must register them yourselves and pay the appropriate NIC directly.

top

Q: Do you offer hosting of mobile websites?

A: Yes, we offer the "goMobi" service. We have a full explination of this service here.

top

Q: I am currently hosted with XYZ.COM and would like to switch hosting to Your-Site. How do I do this?

A: Simply complete our order form. We will setup your account and send you the information needed to update your DNS.

top

Q: How do I transfer my domain hosting to Your-Site?

A: This depends on the Domain Registrar you are using. Network solutions allows you to make changes right on their web site. Others have similar methods. You will need to contact your registrar for assistance. You'll need our name server information.

top

Q: How do I transfer my domain hosting away from Your-Site?

A: If we registered your domain name, you can go here and login with the username and password we assigned you and change the DNS servers to use your new host. If we did not register your domain name then you will need to contact the registrar that you used to register the domain name for assistance in updating the DNS. You will also need to let us know you wish to cancel your hosting with us by submitting a cancellation request form.

top

Q: Will my site be down for any period of time if I transfer to Your-Site? Will I lose mail?

A: Your existing web site and mail service will not be affected provided your account is setup with us first and you've moved your web files to your new account. When the InterNIC updates the root servers pointing your domain to our servers, all new visitors will come to your new site and so will your mail. Some visitors who have cached your old IP address will continue to visit and send mail to your old site for one to two days after the transfer. Be sure to check your old mailbox during this time and you won't lose any mail.

top

Q: Can I transfer my domain name registration from my current registrar to you to take advantage of your low cost yearly renewal rates?

A: We can do this for a 1 time $14.99 fee. The transfer fee includes a year of registration. There are a few steps that need to be done at the current registrar:

1) Make sure the domain's status is 'unlocked'

2) Make sure 'whois privacy' is disabled

3) Make sure the domain is not expired or set to expire in the next 7 days

4) Request an 'Auth Code' so you can validate the transfer

5) Have access to the admin contact email address

Once the above have been done, email support@your-site.com and ask us to start the 'registrar transfer'. Due to the work involved with registrar transfers, the transfer fee is non-refundable if the transfer fails at no fault of ours. We can re-submit the failed request 1 additional time free.

top

Q: Is there any cost associated with transferring my domain hosting to Your-Site?

A: No, there isn't. You simply need to update your domain record to point to our name servers, which can be done free of charge with most domain registrars. We can assist you with this transfer.

top

Q: How do I move the contents of my web site from another provider to Your-Site's servers?

A: There are several ways. One way is to use Expression Web to import your existing web site and then publish it to your new server. Another is to use a tool like Dreamweaver to import a web site and then publish. The prefered method is FTP.

Pre-Sales: Ordering Service

Q: Your main page says your hosting packages are as low as $2/mo., but in the pricing matrix, I see $5/mo. What gives?

A: The $2/mo. rate is valid only if you pay biennially. Our biennial cost on starter web hosting is $48, which works out to $2/mo.

top

Q: How long does it take to get an account setup at Your-Site?

A: When you submit your order, your creditcard will be attempted to be billed. If succesful, your account will be active within a business hour. Orders placed after standard business hours will be setup during the next business day.

top

Q: I am transferring from another host. I need time to setup my web site on Your-Site's servers before I transfer my domain. Is this OK, or does the domain have to be transferred immediately?

A: You can take all the time you need because you will be the one transferring the domain. As a web host, we don't have any special authority to modify your domain. All registrars will require your permission in order to transfer the domain.

top

Q: I am switching hosting from another provider to Your-Site. Who will transfer my domain?

A: You will. See above.

top

Q: Is it safe to give you my credit card on-line?

A: Yes, it is. When you use our secure order form, the connection between your web browser and our computer is encrypted so you can safely transmit your credit card details to us.

top

Q: I don't have a credit card. Can I get my account setup today and be billed so I can pay via check?

A: While we can accept orders from people who prefer to pay by check, we are unable to setup your order until we receive payment for it. This is due to the high number of fraud orders that used to be placed when we did setup check paying customers and offer 30 days for payment. Simply fill out the normal order form and select "Check Billing. Print out a copy of your order and mail it in with your check. Our mailing address can be found here. Checks need to drawn from an account that is in US funds.

top

Q: I live halfway around the world and would like to pay by check. How can I do this?

A: Paying us by check from another country is easy. Simply go to your bank and request a check made out in US dollars that is drawn from a US bank. There will be a small fee for this transaction. Some banks will even mail the check for you.

top

Q: I noticed you have a 30 day money back guarantee. If I cancel my account within 30 days, am I entitled to a FULL refund including setup fees?

A: If you cancel your account within 30 days, you'll receive a full refund of all fees, except domain registration fees, since you get to keep your domain and move it elsewhere.

top

Q: I have a Windows machine and you have UNIX servers. Can I still use your service?

A: Of course. In fact, many of the machines you interact with on a daily basis (web servers, e-mail servers, IRC servers, etc.) are run off of UNIX machines. You will have no problem publishing your site or sending/reading e-mail.

Pre-Sales: Service Related Questions

Q: I like the ability to specify what options I want on my web site. Can I add options at a later date?

A: You can upgrade your plan at anytime.

top

Q: Do you offer any website building tools?
A: Yes, we currently offer Drupal, Wordpress, CMS MadeSimple and a template based website editor all installable from within your cpanel on all hosting packages except Jumpstart.

top

Q: Can I send outbound mail through your servers?

A: Yes, you can. We do have anti-spam protection that mandates you use SMTP Authentication to send email. We also have strict anti-spam policies as well as limits to how many emails you can send per day, which is currently 1440.

top

Q: If I need support, how can I contact you and during what hours?

A: At Your-Site, we offer real telephone support in addition to e-mail support . Our current phone support hours are M-F 9am-5pm EST. Email is answered during off-hours, but we can not guarantee as fast a response time as if it were received during normal business hours. For support info, go here

top

Q: Your prices are very low. Some low priced web hosting companies insert banner advertisements on their clients' web pages to help make ends meet. Do you do anything of the sort?

A: No! I'm surprised people ask us this. We're a real, professional hosting service. We certainly do not.

top

Q: What sort of backbone connection do you have?

A: A long haul OC-192 national backbone that links together all major U.S. cities, is Layer 3 protected, utilizes IP-over-DWDM technology and operates at 80 Gbps (scalable to 15x that amount) making it the largest network of its kind in the industry. This backbone extends directly into our collocation center via an OC-48 connection which connects to our network..

top

Q: Do you offer NT based hosting?

A: Due to the unreliability, poor RFC compliance and watered-down networking protocols of Windows NT, we do not offer NT based hosting. However, we do offer FrontPage support.

top

Q: Can I telnet to my UNIX shell to make changes and schedule programs to run at certain times?

A: Currently we only allow SSH access to users on the Professional Plan that meet our criteria. Due to
security reasons, there is a list of requirements that must be met in order to be granted access.

top

Q: Can I use telnet access to run IRC bouncers or bots?

A: I'm sorry, you may not. Our shell access is for interactive access only and for tasks specifically related to your web site.

top

Q: What is this "5 gigs" data transfer that you offer with the starter account and is it enough for me?

A: Our monthly transfer allocation only applies to the data you send over HTTP requests (visitors downloading your web pages over the web). 5 Gigs is more than enough for most of our users.

top

Q: Does FTP and E-mail count towards my allotted monthly transfer?

A: No, you can publish your site and interactively send/receive e-mail without worrying about bandwidth.

top

Q: Your pricing lists a monthly, quarterly, yearly and biennial fee. Is this offering me a choice of which billing plan I want or do I pay $5 every month, $12 once every 3 months, $39 each year and $48 every two years for a total of $101? (Short answer: it's a choice of billing frequency, you get to pick one).

A: The different prices we give offer you a choice. You only pay one!

top

Q: Do you offer catchall e-mail forwarding so I can get mail at addresses at my domain that I don't specifically predefine.

A: We have offered this in the past, but due to problem with spam and virus infected emails, we no longer offer this. You can create email accounts or aliases for just about any address you want.

top

Q: Do I get my own IP address with my hosting account?

A: When we began hosting in 1996, we offered an IP address with each account. This was because many of the browsers did not support the so called "host header" or "name only" way of doing this. Today, 99% or more of the browsers on the Internet support this method, so we no longer offer dedicated IP addresses.

top

Q: Do you offer audio or video streaming?

A: Yes, we do. There are several ways to implement these, most involve third party software such as JW Player that you would have to download, install and configure yourself. If you don't mind ads on your videos, uploading videos to YouTube.com then embeding them on your webpage is far easier.

top

Q: How can I upload/publish my web site to your server?

A: You can use a variety of methods. One is simple FTP using a client such as Filezilla. Another is to use Expression Web. Yet another is Dreamweaver, which we use (when we're not using vi :-). Which ever tool you choose to use, make sure that is supports 'passive mode' and that it is enabled otherwise you will not be able to publish your files.

top

Q: Do you offer Unlimited Bandwidth or disk space?

A: Unfortunately, we do not.

Bandwidth and disk space are commodities. Just like any other commodity, there is a cost or a value associated with it. Since it costs us for bandwidth and storage hardware, we must pass that cost to you. There is always a limit to any feature promoted as 'Unlimited'. We prefer to be upfront about limits rather than offering 'Unlimited' with a hidden limit.

top

Q: Can I have more than one domain pointing to a web site, for example domain.com, domain.net and domain.org?

A: Yes. This is called "Domain Aliasing". Aside from the inexpensive $14.99/yr. domain registration fees, it's free. If you are transfering an already registered domain to us that you would like aliased, we charge a one time $10 setup fee.

top

Q: Can I have these subdomains point to different content, pages or subdirectories on the same web site?

A: Yes, you can have subdomains point to a different folder and it requires a sub-account. The cost for this is a 1 time $5 fee.

We currently do not support the pointing of different domains to different subfolders of just 1 website.
